RBSS President 2025-2026

Dear RBSS members,

As a hepatopancreatobiliary oncologic surgeon and President of the Royal Belgian Society of Surgery, it is both an honor and a pleasure to welcome you to our next national congress, from the 23th to the 26th of April 2026.

The theme for this year — “Individualized Surgical Oncology: Honoring Tradition, Embracing Innovation” — reflects a vision that I believe is both timely and essential. Surgical oncology remains one of the most demanding and complex fields of our profession. Today, we are challenged  to deliver treatments that are not only technically sophisticated, but also tailored to the unique biological, physical, and emotional realities of every individual patient.

Innovation plays an expanding role in how we face these challenges. Advances in imaging, molecular profiling, robotics, and artificial intelligence are reshaping our practice, offering new opportunities to make surgery safer, smarter, and more precise.

However, as we look forward, we must also remain grounded in the fundamental principles that have guided generations of surgeons before us — anatomy, clinical judgment, and a profound respect for the human body as an entity. Techniques that have stood the test of time, the wisdom gained from experience, and the humility learned in the operating room remain as relevant as ever — even as we push the boundaries of what is possible.I believe deeply that the future of surgery depends on this delicate fusion of tradition and innovation.

To the young surgeons among us : the path you’ve chosen is not easy. It will test your limits, both professionally and personally. But it is also deeply meaningful. In a time when many in medicine — and society — struggle with a sense of purpose, returning to your core values is key. What will carry you through is not just knowledge or skill, but your passion for making a difference in the lives of your patients. Let this passion inspire your learning, sharpen your judgment, and remind you, even in the toughest moments, why you chose this remarkable profession. Stay curious, committed, and above all, stay passionate for your patients, for your craft, and for excellence .

Let this congress be a space for learning, reflection, and inspiration.  I look forward to welcoming you there.

Alexandra Dili, MD, PhD

President of the Royal Belgian Surgical Society 2025-2026

Law on reform of surgical training published

After several years of long discussions and thoughtfull considerations, the new training in surgery has been published in het Staatsblad/le Moniteur Belge on 15/07/2024.

With this new training curriculum, candidates from 2026 onwards will be offered training towards 4 new levels 2 of recognition (level 1: medical doctor, level 2: specialty doctor) in surgery after 6 years of training: visceral surgery, vascualr surgery, thoracic surgery and cardiac surgery.

These new regulatory changes will mark a clear difference in training of our future colleagues as the training will be compliant with the European regulatory frame work of 2005/36/EC – annex V. More work is now on the way for finalising the implementation of this reform into daily practice, as well as at the level of the recognition committees.

The official published texts can be consulted here (pdf, web NL, web FR).

RBSS President 2024-2025

Dear RBSS members,

What a privilege to become president of the Royal Belgian Society for Surgery. I am a hernia surgeon. Yes indeed. Specialized in abdominal wall surgery. Doing just that. Yes, that is a thing. Becoming president of our overarching surgical Belgian society feels like an important step in the recognition of our sub-specialty. Thank you.

The surgical landscape is changing rapidly with more surgeons focusing on a limited field of the surgical spectrum and the "general surgeon" working alone slowly disappearing because of centralization of care into specialized hospitals or between surgeons within surgical teams. Larger surgical groups allow for a better work-life balance and for a higher volume of specific surgical diseases allowing for more dedicated up-to-date patient care.

Training the future generation of surgeons is the next challenge for our profession. How to train within the working time restrictions? How to determine the number of surgeons needed? And the number needed for specific subspecialities? How many years should we train before getting into a subspeciality trajectory?

One of the privileges of being president of RBSS is to organize the yearly congress of the society aka Belgian Surgical Week. Since the renovation of the Thermae Palace hotel is postponed for another year, we are happy to meet again April 24th -26th 2025 in Ostend. The theme will be: "The Impact of patient/surgeon gender on surgical outcome". Surely a theme that can inspire and create interesting discussions. See you all there.

Invitation for the Extraordinary General Assembly of the RBSS npa (UK)

On November 28th, 2023 at 19.30 hrs, the npa/vzw/asbl RBSS-KBGH-SRCB convenes  its members to vote on its revised RBSS bylaws adapted in accordance with the new law on 'asbl/vzw'.

Members can be present in person at the society's headquarters, or participate online. If you wish to vote but cannot make it to the assembly, in accordance with the bylaws, proxy voting is possible. Yet an attending  member may only be holder of 1 proxy vote! Kindly bear this in mind when delegating your vote and be sure this member receiving your proxy vote will be present – live or online - at the General Assembly.

In accordance with the bylaws, only current active regular and titular members of the RBSS, having settled their yearly membership fee latest by 24th November 2023,  have a right to vote. And it goes without saying that other members including junior members are more than welcome to attend this Assembly.

Registering for this important General Assembly - be it live at the RBSS HQ’s or online - is mandatory!

This meeting being only accessible for RBSS members, you need to login first via the login form at the right in order to register for the General Assembly or to execute your vote by proxy.

Should you opt for an online participation, approximately half an hour before the start of the meeting you will receive the link for connecting via zoom on your email address used in your RBSS.be profile.

If you are entitled to vote, shortly after the start of the meeting a digital voting ballot will be sent to your same email address. Should you equally be a proxy-receiver, you will have more than one voting ballot in your mailbox.
