Dear colleagues Our discipline does not escape the transformative impact of the data revolution. Whether applied to preoperative planning, real time decision support during surgery, outcome prediction, training and skills assessment, postoperative monitoring, or clinical and translational research, the growing availability of high quality data and computing as well as robotic infrastructure in combination with machine learning algorithms has the potential to generate actionable insights, reduce costs and complications, and enhance the quality of surgical practice as well as research. Next year’s congress, themed ‘Data driven surgery: from intuition to algorithms’, will explore emerging applications of data based innovations such as computer vision to delineate anatomy and margins, augmented and virtual reality to standardize surgery and training, and the use of large datasets to develop performant prediction models and to enable running virtual, target emulating trials. At the same time, the congress will look beyond the hype and highlight caveats such as the current paucity of real world clinical benefits and value of artificial intelligence and big data, and concerns about ecological footprint, privacy, equity, and security. I am confident that we will succeed in offering a program that will be stimulating and rewarding for surgeons of all levels of training and from all disciplines. This year, the congress will be organized at the Bruges Meeting & Convention Centre, located in the heart of the historic centre of Bruges, within walking distance of numerous hotels, historic attractions and world-famous museums. We look forward to welcoming you all in Bruges! On behalf of the RBSS board, Wim Ceelen RBSS President, 2026-2027 |
