The RBSS is the platform for all Belgian Surgeons.
Congress theme : “OUT of the BOX”
Venue: Flanders Meeting and Convention Center, Antwerp (https://www.fmcca.com/en)
Our first weekend of meeting between RBSS and BAST took place the weekend of October 20-21 2018. We had two very fruitful mornings with the trainees who could use several simulators. On Saturday afternoon, we had several team building activities on the race circuit of Francorchamps: pit stop and circuit tour aboard of a Renault Megane RS.
Just before the RBSS-BAST weekend, the first stage of the 'VATS tour-de-Belgique' took place in Erasme hospital. The VATS tour is supported by RBSS and wants to bring young promissing trainees together with renowned surgeons players in their domain of surgery - starting with thoracic surgery as a first discipline. Our two trainees (Dr Arendt and Dr Goeteyn) were able to attend a VATS lobectomy, Lung Volume Reduction Surgery, broncho-navigation and MOC. We had also a pleasant dinner on Thursday evening.

Dear Colleagues,
First of all I would like to thank you for the confidence and trust you have placed in me since 3 years to fulfil in 2019 the position of President of the Royal Belgian Society of Surgery.
I think that the society in collaboration with the universities must play a role in education of the trainees - that is why we have organized last year the VATS Belgian tour to visit some of the best places in Belgium to learn thorascopy. I hope that it will give ideas to sections and affiliated societies to develop their own 'Belgian tour', like it could be for obesity surgery, robotic surgery, rectal surgery and TME, …

Dear Colleagues,
First of all I would like to thank you for the confidence and trust you have placed in me to fulfill the position of President of the Royal Belgian Society of Surgery.
In the coming years, major assignments will need to be further developed.
Firstly, all involved associations, be they scientific of professional, will need to finalize the reform in Belgian surgical training. To this date, considerable advancement has been made in a convivial and positive climate. I sincerely hope that this can be continued so as to reach a definite model of national surgical training.
In 2018, the Society will celebrate its 125th anniversary. The event will be marked at the next Belgian Surgical Week (3rd – 5th May 2018). A Golden Book, dedicated to the history of Belgian surgery and written by Professors R. Van Hee and P. Mendes da Costa, will be published. Since the creation of our Society, we have been inundated with new surgical technologies.
All along, surgical progress has been unbelievable. Starting off as a craftsmanship whereby the scalpel and the hand were the most important operating instruments it has evolved, thanks to the digital revolution, to a highly technological science whereby complex and expensive instruments have been developed. These advances have drastically changed modern surgery.
Bearing this in mind, next year’s congress shall therefore be dedicated to the theme ‘THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY”.
At today’s rate of change, surgeons will see not one, but many revolutions during their career – the practice of surgery is changing faster than at any time in the past.
Training, financing as well as concentration of heavy pathologies and networking will certainly be matters of concern for our young surgeons.
In the light of the above mentioned facts, I believe that all surgeons and trainees in our country need to join hands for the sake of persisting the development of a future-orientated surgery.
With best regards,
Prof. Dr. J. Lamote
President of the Royal Belgian Society of Surgery
2017-2018
In line with the new initiatives by the RBSS, the Board proposes a new logo for our Society. Out of different proposals, one logo has been preselected. This logo has already been used (as a test) into many correspondences linked to the 17th Belgian Surgical Week. The three colors of Belgium are represented in the logo; the yellow and red arches are aimed to represent the fluent movement of the surgical scalpel. Take a look at it… and give your opinion!
